Customer comments and feedback

We ship out thousands of orders, and tens of thousands of plants, each year.  We take pride in the fact that we send healthy, well-grown and groomed, plants.  These are carefully wrapped and boxed and shipped out as soon as possible--more than 90% of orders are shipped within a matter of days of our receiving them.

We guarantee safe delivery of all orders, and healthy, properly labeled, and true-blooming plants.  On occasion (about 1 in every 100 orders), we'll have to make good on our guarantee.  Sometimes, plants perish in weather that's too hot or cold, sometimes the post office "squashes" a box and, sometimes, we're to blame for poor packaging or clerical mistakes.  In such cases, we'll reship plants, issue a credit, or refund money (we need to do this on about 1 in every 200 or so orders).  In any event, we always try to please and look for ways to improve our growing, shipping, or service.

Need to contact us? You can send us an email, or a immediate answer to you question, it's always best to contact us by phone (585-374-8592) during normal business hours (12-5 pm EST).

Here's a few of the unsolicited comments recently made by some of our customers.  All appear precisely as written, without editing.  So that the page doesn't become too lengthy, we only reprint those received during the last 3 months.

The "compliments":  Some of our recent satisfied customers speak.....

From John, in OH
In April 2008, I ordered my first strep--'Bristol's Tie Dyed'.  I started bloomin in May, 2008.  It has NEVER been without bloom!  I has blooms non-stop for two years!  In April 2009, I ordered 'Bristol's Anteater', 'Bristol's Ribbon Candy', and 'Bristol's Nightfall'.  They started blooming in May 2009.  They have NEVER been without bloom!  The have bloomed non-stop for one year!  In April 2010, I just ordered again.  I can't wait to get them because I suspect that once they start blooming they will never be without bloom!  NOTHING in life has given me more pleasure than the streptocarpus I have purchased from you.  I have attached a picture (taken last September) of my strep collection.  The plants kept on blooming like that all through one of our worst Midwest winters, providing a much-needed break from the snow.  April 23, 2010

From Mary, in WA
Thank you, thank you for doing such a good job shipping my African violet order!  I was so impressed with how carefully not only each plant was packed, but the whole package as well.  You could give some lessons to some large companies in the plant business.  Thank you, too, for the free plant.  I was hesitant about ordering from an internet company I knew nothing about, but the comments from other customers convinced me.  I also found the complaints helpful, too, as my expectations were more realistic.  Can't wait to grow these new beauties!  April 23, 2010

From Wally, in OR
The plant quality, the wrapping, shipping, and labeling are the finest of any I have ever seen and I order a lot of plants on EBay.  Thanks.  April 25, 2010

From Teresa, in CA
Thanks!  Got my order yesterday, everything looks great, very minor leaf damage on one plant (no damage claim!).  So wow!  Great job on packing these babies for the long journey to Northern California!  I just wanted to say thanks, and that everything was great.  This was my first order with you, but I will order again.  April 25, 2010

From Claire, in MD
Wanted to say thank you for the wonderful shipping and quality of plants that I received today.  I ordered severaly mini and trailing violets and they all arrived in mint condition....5 out of the 7 were with buds or bloom.  You guys are great...keep on growing and I'll keep on buying!  May 1, 2010

From India,
My order arrived safely.  What beautiful plants!!!  They were packed very well which helped keep them safe on the journey.  Thanks so much.  I will order from you again soon.  May 7, 2010

From Quanah, in OK
Not one broken leaf--you need to give lessons to others.  May 7, 2010

From Annie, in KY
I called today regarding my mother's order as we haven't received it and the weather is unseasonably cold up here just now.  However, the order arrived safely later today.  It was well packed and the plants in excellent shape, not even flattened as well as very healthy looking.  We just wanted to let you know.  May 9, 2010

From Laura, in CA
Just received my order placed last week, and I am EXTREMELY pleased with the quality of the plants and pots.  May 11, 2010

From Richard, in MD
Hi.  I have called you twice.  Once to buy a few things, once for advice.  Both times I was handled by a friendly, competent person.  They picked up the phone.  I am just getting started with these leafy addictive critters.  You are my people.  Thanks.  May 12, 2010

From Liza, in VA
My violets came yesterday, and they were so beautiful, I almost started to cry!  Thank you so very much!  May 14, 2010

From Sameena, in WI
Thank you for my order.  They are absolutely gorgeous!  May 16, 2010

From Kathleen, in NJ
I just wanted to thank you--my mother received the 10 assorted violets on Friday and called me to say how beautiful they are and how perfectly they shipped.  Mom was particularly impressed by the meticulous wrapping of each plant and that every plant was in bloom.  She was completely thrilled: "a Mother's Day present worth waiting for".  Thank you again!  May 16, 2010

From Michelle, in NM
They arrived and are gorgeous.  Thanks so much.  Expect more business in the near future.  May 17, 2010

From Genny, in NY
The violets you sent are spectacular!  Three in full bloom.  Thank you so much.  May 17, 2010

From Melissa, in IL
My sister recently ordered 30 mini plants as party favors for our mother's 80th birthday celebration, and I just wanted to say, they exceeded our expectations!  The plants were adorable!  The different varieties, the sweet little blooms, the different pretty leaves....  We wrapped them in origami paper, tied with a ribbon, and put them on the tables with our mother's own African violets as centerpieces, and everyone commented.  They were a surprise for mom, and she was blown away.  I'll recommend your business to anyone looking for a violet or for sweet party favors.  Thank you, thank you!  Because of your little violets, what was a fun event was even better.  May 17, 2010

From Pamela, in MA
I received my little begonias last night and I can't thank you enough for your care in packaging.  I worked for many years in customer service jobs involving shipping and I never in my life have seen such exquistite packaging.  My begonias had no choice but to arrive in perfect shape.  I will be sure to recommend your website at every opportunity.  I love your technique of photographing the leaves of a group of plants together.  What might make it more perfect would be if you put a ruler on one side of the picture so the viewer can get an idea of size.  May 21, 2010   Our note:  Actually, a ruler might not help as much you would think--the leaves aren't always selected with scale in mind, more so for representative shape and color.  We understand, though.

From Taryn, in MA
Just another happy customer saying thank you!  I ordered a grower's assortment of mini and trailing violets for my mom.  The arrived in Massachussetts 3 days later in beautiful condition--soil still perfectly moist and a few with little blooms.  Mom is so impressed with how they were shipped and in what great condition they are in.  Thanks for such a great deal!  Feel free to print my comment!  Thank you again!  May 21, 2010

From Sharon, in PA
I just received my order late last week and am writing to tell you that I am very pleased with it.  The plants are beautiful and the miniatures are well shaped and very exquisite.  I was pleased with the substitute mini and the gift plant as well.  Just as the last order I received last fall, the plants were in great condition and well-packed, wrapped, and collared by MC, BF, and KG.  Only one leaf on one plant was crinkled along the edge and will recover withou losing much of the leaf.  May 23, 2010

From Thomas, in FL
All the plants came in perfect condition!  Was really impressed with your quality assurance policy.  Listing who packaged and wrapped these violets was really amazing.  Have not seen that kind of detail.  You are to be commended.  Could not help but notice the newspaper was in Chinese.  Any comment?  Thank you again for a great website and great plants.  Will be ordering more when I get the room.  May 24, 2010  Our note:  We're big newspaper readers (and users) here, getting 4 different ones delivered to us daily, and we recycle all of it.  We wrap the plants either in the Wall Street Journal or the Chinese language paper you refer to, and use the rest as filler material when packing.  Being from Taiwain, Olive is the only one here who is able to read the Chinese paper.

From Laura, in CA
Received my grower's choice 10 standard violets on Friday!  Without a doubt an exceptional value on absolutely lovely, perfect, violets.  All arrived in perfect condition despite traveling from the east coast to the west coast!  I will definitely be ordering from you in the future and will let people know about you!  May 24, 2010

From Carol, in WA
I am happy to say I received my order today and was extremely pleased.  The plants were everything you advertised, and the packaging kept them very protected.  I am looking forward to placing another order from you soon.  Thank you.  May 29, 2010

From Terri, in MD
I just wanted to comment on my violet order.  This was my first order from you.  I was VERY impressed with how carefully they were packaged.  I must admit I was a little concerned with purchasing them through the mail because they are so delicate, but they arrived intact, beautiful, and healthy.  I am looking forward to enjoying watching my violets grow and bloom.  I will spread the word to my friends and family.  Thank you so much.  June 5, 2010

From Bob, in IL
Got the plants today, everything looks good.  I give you and your company AAA rating on packing.  Last fall I ordered 10 plants from a famous company, they could use some packing lessons from you.  Will be ordering again in about 3 weeks.  Thanks again.  June 5, 2010

From Sarah, in ID
I received my little violets today and I was amazed at your wonderful packaging.  Out of three plants, only lost one leaf.  They all look very healthy...I'm so pleased!  Thank you.  June 5, 2010

From Linda, in VA
I received them today, and I cannot begin to tell you how excited I am.  They are so tiny and beautiful.  The 'gentle care' packaging was amazing and then to unwrap the teeny little plants and have them look so healthy--THANK YOU.  I can hardly wait for them to bloom and see the smile on my Dad's face.  You've mad my day and his Father's day.  Thank you so much.  June 10, 2010

From Hans, in PR
On June, I was pleasantly surprised to receive my order.  Quality of plants appears to be excellent and packing was truly exceptional.  Service was very quick.  Thanks for a great transaction.  June 12, 2010

From Betty, in NM
Can't express my delight in violet choices.  Received order this date in perfect condition.  No spilled soil, no broken leaves.  Thank you so much.  June 15, 2010

From Richard, in AZ
My plant order arrived today, in very good condition (so far as I can tell).  This surprised me a bit, as today's temperature was 112f--and the %&$# mailman put the parcel in a large metal mailbox in full sun!  When I opend the parcel it was very warm inside, but the plants seem to be just fine.  I thing this says a LOT for your careful and thoughtful packing techniques.  I am very pleased with what you sent, and you can anticipate future orders.  Thank you very much.  June 24, 2010

From Gay, in CA
Eleven plants arrived safely without even a bent leaf.  Thank you for your very careful packing.  It's very much appreciated.  June 25, 2010

From Debra, in FL

From Patti, in OH
My last orderes have been wonderful.  I order from you every year and you never disappoint.  Thanks again.  July 5, 2010

From Patty, in NY
My husband drove me to your store last Thursday.  The five and a half hours and back that it took us was well worth it.  Matt was at the front store.  I need to tell you that he was very informative and pleasant.  He graciously packed the violets I bought and they arrived in good shape.  Both of us loved your store.  Congratulations!!  I'll be revisiting in November when Matt tells me Is when most of your violets are in bloom.  Once again, we enjoy all of your violets.  July 6, 2010

From Maria, in CA
I would like to start off with a big A+ to your company.  I order a lot of plants through the internet and I never have had such careful packaging and fast shipping from any other company as I got from yours.  The plants were all in great shape and look beautiful.  Your compnay takes such care in wrapping them, even the flowers were still nice.  I thought coming all the way across the US that at least one would have had some kind of minor damage, but all were perfect.  I will definitely be ordering more from you guys.  I also would like to say that I am definitely recommending you to my friends that also enjoy African violets.  Thank you again for such great service.  July 16, 2010

From Karter, in WI
Just wanted to send a quick note to let you know that the plants arrived today and are VERY nice.  A couple of them are much bigger than I would have expected, and even in bud already.  Many thanks!  July 22, 2010

From Katherine, in NE
The plants came today--beautifully packed and in great shape.  I was concerned since we are having a heat wave, but they are just fine.  Thanks for taking such good care of them!  July 22, 2010

From Maurice, in CA
I just received my package today, thank you.  I'm impressed about the packing, you guys do one excellent job.  Although the plants size is a little smaller than what I expected, I am pleased with this purchasing.  Thank you.  July 23, 2010

From Nita, in WA
I received my violet order yesterday and they look great.  The packaging did its job and these violets look like they just came off your shelves.  I am telling my friends of your quality plants.  July 23, 2010

From Suzanne, in FL
They arrived in perfect condition!!  I'm so impressed.  I've repotted, etc. and will follow all your instructions--thanks so much!!  July 24, 2010

...and some "constructive" criticism:  Yes, we sometimes get complaints--we guarantee safe delivery on all orders and occasionally need to process a refund or send a replacement plant (our average is about 1 in every 100 orders).  We haven't printed these.  These are the more specific complaints/comments that customers have made--we reprint them so that we have a chance to explain, improve our work and, perhaps, avoid similar problems in the future.....

From Sonja, in KS
Just wanted to let you know that I probably will not be ordering from you again.  Last September I ordered eight plants from you.  Upon arrival, I planted them per the instructions.  The plants were all very tiny but I had hopes they would grow.  While the two violets have grown a little, they have yet to flower and certainly do not look as healthy as the my others.  The columnea, hoya, alsobia, episcia are all struggling just to stay alive while the other episcia has died completely.  The only one that is thriving at all is the Kohleria.  I don't know whether you can or will do anything to rectify this situation, but I did want to let you know why I am not happy with your products.  By the way, I am not a novice.  I have been a master gardener for quite a few years.   May 4, 2010  Our reply: Not everyone is guaranteed success growing plants, and not all plants are the same.  Each of these plants has there own needs and wants--like children, the general needs are the same, but to be truly successful raising them the special needs for each must be addressed.  We've given talks to many "master gardener" groups, and it's rare that many in the audience have any real experience or knowledge with gesneriads (most of the plants we sell).  The plants we grow and sell CAN be grown successfully with only moderate effort.  Nearly all the photos you see here are of plants we personally have grown.  None get "special" treatment, just what they need, (usually) when they need it.  Many pictured are grown on our windowsills--i.e. they don't require special "greenhouse" conditions.  Should you ever encounter difficulty growing a particular plant, please call us during business hours.  We can give you advice and guide you.  We can only promise to ship healthy plants that can be successfully grown, but we cannot guarantee results--that's always up to you.

From Susan, in ME
Hello, I received my plants today.  I have ordered before, but it was long ago.  I was surprised how little the streps were.  I knew they would be small but these barely have more than one leaf, of course no buds at all and two have brown around the edges.  The African violet has no buds at all.  Can you clarify what you feel I shoud have expected from this order?  I would like to know so if I order in the future I will know that to expect.  Also, I suppose I would never order as a gift because they will not be ready for months.  Also, would you say it would be reasonable to expect a replacement on the two streps?  May 14, 2010  Our reply:  The two streps you refer to were, indeed, smaller than what we normally ship.  We are very short on supply of these two varieties and sent the largest that we had--there were no others to choose from.  When told to send a specific variety, we try to send the plant requested, so long as it is mature enough to survive shipping, which they did.  If allowed to choose ourselves, we almost always can send larger plants, often in bud.  Yes, we wouldn't order streps as a gift since, at best, we can only sned the largest plant that can be wrapped and shipped in a 2" pot, which is far from a fully grown plant for a streptocarpus (they grow very quickly, though).  If it is more important to receive the largest/most mature plant we can safely ship, it is always best to leave the selection up to us, without regard to the variety.  We cannot have all varieties available as mature plants, all the time.  This is especially true in late spring, when our volume of orders is the greatest.  As for the brown edges, this likely occurred in wrapping/transit--we trim away such imperfections before packing.  Some minor cosmetic damage, like that described, can sometimes occur when shipping plants through the mail,  So long as they arrived healthy and intact, they will grow....this is up to you.

From Van Gael, in France
I have just received my parcel.  Violets are not very nice, but they are still alive.  Parcel had been stopped at the airport.  Never use USPS for French customers!  If you enter "frozen parcel", "roissy" (French airport) on search engine, you will find French forum about that and it will always be the same problem: USPS.  To take the necessary steps, to find perishables forwarding agen had been possible but very difficult, expensive, and long (a whole week).  June 3, 2010.  Our reply:  Unfortunately, USPS is the only service that will even accept houseplants for international shipment on our end.  There have been no problems to any other country--only to France.  We have had excellent success sending to everywhere else in the world.  We agree with you and warn our French customers of the potential problems.  This is why we don't accept responsibility for actions of customs and delivery persons in other countries.  We can only pack plants as well as possible and ship them as best we can, and understand should you not want to order again.

If you'd like an immediate response, please call us during business hours (12-5 pm EST), since we don't always have the time to deal with letters or e-mails promptly.  We aim to please.

For questions regarding culture and care of your plants, we ask that you review the web-site first, since most problems and commonly asked questions are addressed here.  If you need a personal response, please call us (again during business hours) since we may need information you hadn't thought of providing concerning your plant's condition.  Again, we haven't the time nor staff to personally reply to all letters and e-mails.
